People count age differently in different cultures. This calculator follows the most common way, where a person’s age increases on their birthday. For example, if someone has lived for 3 years and 11 months, they are considered 3 years old. Their age will become 4 on their next birthday. Most Western countries use this system.

In some cultures, age is counted differently. Some count the current year as part of the age. For example, a 20-year-old person might also be called 21 in another system. In a traditional Chinese age system, people are born at age 1, and their age increases on the Traditional Chinese New Year instead of their birthday. For example, if a baby is born one day before the Chinese New Year, they will be 2 years old just two days later, even though they are only 2 days old.

Sometimes, the month and day results in this calculator might seem confusing, especially when the start date is at the end of a month. For example, we count February 20 to March 20 as one month. However, from February 28, 2022, to March 31, 2022, there are two ways to count. If we count February 28 to March 28 as one month, the result is one month and 3 days. But if we count both February 28 and March 31 as the end of the month, the result is just one month. Both ways are correct. The confusion happens because months have different numbers of days. In this calculator, we use the first method.
